I am great with machines, videogames, code, and many other inherently techy activities. Throughout my life, I have had challenges communicating my ideas and even bigger challenges trying to understand human emotions. I find it hard to read people, to understand why someone is happy or sad. Actions and reactions from people around me seem inexplicable; a complete mystery I can’t solve.
As I moved from city to city, country to country, I found that the complexity of communication only increased with time. I am fortunate to have people with me along the journey to help me navigate this crazy, at time incomprehensible world. However, these people cannot be with me all the time. I need to close this gap of mine.
Choosing to pursue a master’s degree was easy for me. Changing from science and technology to humanities was a hard decision. This decision not only baffled many of my close friends and family, but it also terrified me. Jumping into what scares me the most, a clear gap in my knowledge, was and always will be a scary proposition.
On the other hand, choosing the university was straightforward. I attended Jesuit middle and high schools Mexico. I have fond memories and not-so great ones of my time there. The Jesuit’s humane approach to education made the decision easier. Gonzaga’s mission to develop the whole person is exactly what I was looking for, what I needed the most.
During my time at Gonzaga, I have found the professors follow these precepts. They not only focus on what is in the textbook but extend their exploration beyond the word. Most of the people I have met at Gonzaga, both faculty and students, show they care about you as a person.
Gonzaga’s mission is to “develop the whole person.” I find this in line with my goals. I want to develop myself as a full person, not only through knowledge of a subject matter but by growing as a person spiritually, culturally, and emotionally.
The communications program offers a wide variety of opportunities concerning Gonzaga’s Mission. Students can find a variety of course options that explore many subjects and interests. I have enjoyed courses around Servant Leadership and Ethics. Knowing my limitations, I know that Gonzaga has helped me become a better person who can express my ideas in a clear way that helps others understand.
